Hitchhiking out
Northwest towards Tambov and Moscow via R22 (also M6)
From the fifth bus stop of Volzhsky bus station, a bus departs daily (except Thursdays) at 6:20 to Elan via R22. Ask the driver to stop after the turn to Grachi, then walk past the U-turn towards Volgograd to the 938 km marker, where you can start hitchhiking.
North towards Engels and Samara via R229
The main hitchhiking spot is immediately after the railroad crossing, the traffic police post, and the roundabout, which filters out local traffic. This spot is accessible on foot from the GIBDD Post bus stop, with about seven buses and minibus 105a from Volzhsky.
Southeast towards Akhtubinsk and Astrakhan via 18R-1
The hitchhiking spot is near the 50 km marker after the turn to Zaplavnoye. Ask the driver of minibus 102t, which departs from the Ploshchad Stroiteley stop in Volzhsky, to stop there.

Accommodation and Sleep
- Couchers, Couchsurfing, HospitalityClub, Trustroots, BeWelcome;
- You can also find a couch host via CouchBot: send the city name to the VK group chat or, if preferred, through CouchBot on Telegram. For tips on how and when to write a request, read here.
- Pitching a tent within the city is possible in the dense shelterbelt between microdistrict 8 and the wholesale base off the trails, but it is strongly discouraged due to proximity to hostels in the local ghetto (microdistrict 8) and high activity of homeless people. It is also possible to pitch a tent in the lowland near Lake Krugloe, but this place is also unsafe, as it is frequently chosen by locals for recreation. The most acceptable and safe places for wild camping are on the right bank of the Akhtuba River in the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain, reachable by public transport from the city.
Other useful info
- The city has a well-developed public transport network: bus schedule, tram schedule, and minibus schedule on 2GIS.
- Supermarkets such as Pyaterochka (see on 2GIS) and Magnit (see on 2GIS) are widespread and offer food at reasonable prices; there are also many canteens throughout the city.
