Werne, also known as Werne an der Lippe, is a small town located in the north-east of the Ruhr Area in western Germany, roughly halfway between the cities of Dortmund and Münster. It is known for the annual Sim-Jü festival at the end of October.
Hitchhiking out
Werne being part of the infamous Ruhr Area makes hitchhiking out of Werne directly very difficult, so it makes more sense to leave by public transport for a better hitchhiking spot. For more information, check out the Hitchwiki page of the Ruhr Area.

Hitchhiking in
Once again, the Ruhr Area makes everything more difficult. Hitchhiking into this specific small town can be quite tricky, so it's always worth asking your driver politely if they can make a small detour to get you directly to Werne. If your driver can't leave the highway, then try the following:
From the A1
Ask your driver to stop at Autohof Werne. From there, easiest is probably to just thumb at the traffic light behind the highway exit, or you can ask people directly at the Autohof, most of them should be locals that all know where Werne is.
From the A2
Ask your driver to stop at highway exit 15 for Kamen/Bergkamen. There's a small parking lot right at the highway exit where your driver can stop. From the parking lot, thumb in direction north towards "Lünen". From Lünen, it should be easy to hitch on the B54 main road towards Werne.
Name Confusion
Werne is not Herne. Those are two completely different cities, but both of them are in the Ruhr Area. Werne is often called "Werne an der Lippe" as well, which might help ease confusion. Also, it has nothing to do with Bochum-Werne either, that is a district of the city of Bochum, also in the Ruhr Area but different place.
Sleep
Coordinates: 51.658474, 7.650104 Map Google OSM
From the City center, head south towards the Lippe river. Explore the trails around the waterfall and you can probably find a quiet place to camp for a night. Wild camping is illegal of course, so don't be too obvious or in the way of people, then nobody will care probably.
