Ust-Barguzin (Russian: Усть-Баргузин) is an urban-type settlement at the mouth of the Barguzin River on the eastern shore of Lake Baikal in the republic of Buryatia in Siberia, Russia. The settlement is the main transport and logistics hub on the eastern shore of Baikal. The major enterprises are a canning factory and a forestry enterprise. Just south of the settlement in the pine forest is the new office of the Barguzin Reserve Administration. The checkpoint for Zabaikalsky National Park (where a fee for visiting the Svyatoy Nos peninsula is collected) is on the dirt road on the right bank of the river; you can walk around it along the shore of Baikal. Internet access was found in the reception area of the director of the "Tourism and Service" college.

Hitchhiking out

Southwest towards Maksimikha, Turka, Goryachinsk, Gremyachinsk, and the city of Ulan-Ude along the asphalt road

From the pier, walk south along the main street (Lenina) passing all the shops, the college, and the market. In the southern part of the settlement, this main street turns east. Continue straight for another 200 meters to reach the reserve office. At the exit from the settlement, there is an intersection with a gas station; the road to Ulan-Ude is signposted south. All the settlements along the Baikal shore have several shops and are inhabited year-round. Near the village of Turka, a huge Special Economic Zone is under construction – a modern port, promenade, fountains, office buildings, parking lots, etc.

Northeast towards Barguzin and Kurumkan along the gravel road

On the eastern outskirts of the settlement, a new bypass road with asphalt has been laid. In 2015, a café with Wi-Fi and a heated toilet opened before the bridge. During the day, the café operates as a canteen serving tasty food; in the evening and at night, it becomes a village disco. About 300 meters after the bridge on the right bank of the Barguzin River, the asphalt ends.

North towards Kurbulik on the Svyatoy Nos peninsula along the dirt road

Leave the settlement as described above, turn left after the bridge and then right along the main dirt road. Here you can see the checkpoint booths and billboards for the FGBU “Zapovednoe Podlemorye”. Here, a fee is collected from cars and each passenger for visiting. The fee is regularly updated, and you can check the amount by emailing [email protected] or by phone at 8 (30131) 91-5-78. You can avoid paying either by: 1. Getting a ride with locals from Kurbulik or neighboring villages—they are often recognized by controllers who may not check documents for passengers. 2. Walking across the field to the mouth of the Barguzin River and heading north along the sandy beach by Baikal. Payment at the checkpoint can be made in cash or by bank card. Receipts must be kept until you leave the reserve. The money is used for amenities like toilets, waste containers, and firewood (sawmill scraps) delivery to the sandbar. Some beaches on the Svyatoy Nos peninsula are leased to private entrepreneurs who may collect an additional "camping services" fee. Hitchhiking on the peninsula roads is possible up to Kurbulik, from where you can continue on foot along trails to Zmeinaya Bay or by boat across the Chivyrkuisky Bay. In Kurbulik, you will find the last shops and the only mobile towers on the peninsula.

Accommodation and Sleep

Free

  • Couchsurfing, HospitalityClub, trustroots, BeWelcome, etc.
  • You can also find a Couchhost through CouchBot: send the name of the city using VK group messages or, if preferred, via CouchBot on Telegram. Instructions on how and when to send requests to maximize your chances are here.
  • Many car tourists from all over Siberia stay in tents. The entire Baikal shore from Maksimikha to Gremyachinsk is a chain of "spontaneous" auto-campgrounds. Many sites have tables, canopies, kitchens, and fish smokers. On many capes there are huts and boat sheds.

  • In all coastal settlements, dozens of tourist bases and "guest houses" operate during the summer.
  • In Ust-Barguzin itself, you will see many advertisements and phone numbers for private accommodations on fences. They (or their relatives) also offer boat trips on the Barguzin Bay.

Other useful info

  • No canteens were found, but many guest houses offer accommodation with meals and "home cooking".
