San Miguel de Tucuman is a city in northern Argentina.
Hitchhiking out
It is not recommended to hitch near the outskirts of the city, as thefts are not rare around these areas. Safety in the city center and around is not a concern though. Tucuman has good public transport connection and hitching in small towns is super effective. Prices are somewhat cheap to move around near areas but quite expensive for longer distances.
North towards Salta
From the terminal, take bus 132, which leave every 15-20 minutes. For about 1200 pesos, it will take you out of the city. You can take it to a suburb and hitch an on-ramp, but it would probably be better to get off at the intersection with Av. Circunvalacion, where there are many on-ramps and a gas station. You can also take a bus from the terminal or somewhere in the way to TAPIA, further away from the city where you can catch longer rides. You have to jump out in the intersection on route 9 before the bus leaves to RACO. This costs around 3000 pesos. (May 2025)
South towards Santiago del Estero ===
From the terminal, take bus to Santa Rosa de Leales in platform 59 or next to, is about 1200 pesos (September 2022) and leave it in the intersection between ruta 306 and ruta 9. Ruta 9 runs to Termas de Rio Hondo, Santiago del Estero and southern. An excellent point to start is YPF Empalme.
South towards Tafi del Valle ===
From the bus station, grab the bus towards Famailla, the price is around 3000 pesos. Ask the driver to drop you in a good spot to hitch.
South towards Cordoba ===
For about 4000 pesos you can take a bus to Simoca. There you can hitch towards Cordoba. You might get short rides, but most trucks go all the way to Cordoba.
