Hitchhiking out
South towards Semipalatinsk via A349
It is convenient to hitchhike south from Rubtsovsk at the intersection of Ulitsa Selmashskaya and Selmashsky Proyezd. There are railway tracks right at the intersection, so car speeds are minimal. You can stand beyond the intersection, which is generally better, or walk a bit further—after a right turn there is a railway crossing.
To reach this intersection, take bus or trolleybus number 1 to the Apteka stop. Exit, walk in the direction the bus was going until the intersection, and turn right. From there walk to the railway intersection, just over a kilometer away. There may be other routes to this intersection, but this is not confirmed. Walking from the railway station to the intersection takes about half an hour. From the north part of the city, you can also take minibus 10 to the final stop "Optovaya baza."
North towards Barnaul via A349
A convenient spot is at the intersection of the bypass road and the road to Myasokombinat. Bus number 4 goes there in the morning and evening. Otherwise, you will have to walk a few kilometers from the Televyshka stop to the intersection with the bypass, trying to hitch at least to the intersection.
East towards Zmeinogorsk
You can reach the position towards Zmeinogorsk by taking trolleybus 2 to the Vodokanal stop. From the stop, you'll see a crossroads with a traffic light (a rare sight in Rubtsovsk). After this intersection, over the bridge across the Aley river, is the hitchhiking spot.
West towards Kulunda
Places to avoid
A typical provincial city with high unemployment and crime rates. It is not recommended to walk around the city with a backpack after dark.

Other useful info
30 km south of the city is the border checkpoint Veseloyarsk on the border with Kazakhstan. The checkpoint can be crossed on foot. After the checkpoint, there is a remote stretch of highway, and you could travel all day towards Semipalatinsk. To save time, you may want to use the Rubtsovsk–Semipalatinsk bus from the railway station; the ticket costs 305 RUB (including luggage), travel time is about four hours.
