Petushki (Russian: Петушки) is a transport hub and the terminal point for Moscow suburban trains in Vladimir Oblast. Petushki is located on the left bank of the Klyazma River (in the Volga basin), 67 km southwest of Vladimir, and 120 km east of Moscow. The city is situated on Federal Highway M7 "Volga" (Moscow — Ufa). To the north, the city is bypassed by the high-speed motorway M12. Since the travels of Venedikt Yerofeyev, hitchhikers have used the long suburban train to Petushki to catch some extra morning sleep and position themselves further from Moscow traffic jams.

Hitchhiking out

North towards M12

  • All interchanges on M12 are equipped with guard rails, no stopping signs, and markings. The only place suitable for stopping a passing car is the rest area with a gas station at kilometer 173 of M12, just north of the village of Vorsha. To get to Vorsha, take the M7 and turn north near the "Magnit" shop on Molodyozhnaya Street. Following this street perpendicular to the highway, you will reach the "Lukoil" gas station on M12. You can talk to drivers who have stopped for refueling/rest, or hitchhike at the exit of the rest area in your needed direction.

West towards Moscow via M7

  • It's worth taking buses 108 or 114 to the interchange of M7 and M12. The stop before the interchange is called "Dachi". Bus 114 also goes further, to Pokrov.

East towards Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod via M7

  • The first stop outside the city is called "Vorsovo". You can get there by buses 102, 107, 109, and 110, or by any minibus heading towards Vladimir. Right at the turn to the village, there's a convenient spot with streetlights and a spacious triangle.

North towards Kolchugino

  • Bus 111 goes to the village of Vospushka only in the mornings. Bus 112 turns to Berezka; get off at the "Sady Bylina" stop, which operates five times a day. Both routes have a stop after the turn from M7, called "Bolnitsa". Contrary to the name, at the city exit, there is not a hospital, but a cemetery. There are no streetlights! At the turn from M7 there is a guard rail. You'll have to hitchhike at the bus stop by the church.
