Pamukkale is a small village in south-western Turkey.
Hitching out
Towards Kurtluca: Walk along the street for ca. 1km until you are at the Intersection of the street going to the southern gate of the Museum. If you try to hitch right out of Pamukkale most of the traffic will go to the southern gate and not Kurtluca
Hitching in
The easiest way to get Pamukkale is from Denizli, hitching directly to the city and then taking Pamukkale Yolu which is the most transited without any doubt. Though coming from Aydin/Izmir you have also an alternative junction at Sarakoy, so many less vehicles pass by there but it is not very difficult to get a lift till the ruins and you will find on your way also another travertine source with water iron in Karahayit village.
Accommodation and Sleep
All the countryside and wood around the ruins is very suitable for wild camping, in the village there are several hotels and a municipal camping too. The local school (closed in summer) is very calm and has a very nice garden, also close to the mosque for having baths.
Update 2025: On the right side of the lake there is a abandoned Bath which is a very good place to sleep. It has Showers and Toilets with running Water and Lockers to store your stuff during the day. The Gates are open, you just have to be carefull that nobody sees you enter.
If you want to enter the Unesco Heritage whitout paying you can exit the bath through the back gate above the former restaurant and cross the river and you will be below a wall. Follow the wall until you can climb a steep slope onto the path and you are in.
