Novorossiysk (Russian: Новороссийск) is a city in the south of Russia, located on the coast of Krasnodar Krai.

  • Novorossiysk was founded on the shore of the ice-free Tsemess Bay, one of the most convenient bays on the Black Sea, originally as a base for the Black Sea Fleet.
  • It is the largest Russian port and a major cement industry center in Southern Russia. However, you will not find any hydrostops or passenger shipping services in Novorossiysk.
  • Many hitchhikers arrive in the Novorossiysk area via the M4 highway in summer to camp on the warm seashores. In winter, it’s better to avoid these places due to strong winds and harsh weather. Autumn and spring are great for hiking in the nearby mountains.

Hitchhiking out

West towards Verkhnebakansky and Anapa via A290/M25

  • Marshrutka (minibus) 8, 8a: Take it to the "Metro" shopping center. Inform the driver in advance. Walk about 400 meters further along the roadside and after the BAU center, start hitchhiking. If heading towards Crimea, aim for Natukhayevskaya or the turn to Raevskaya at the very least. (It’s difficult to get a lift directly from the traffic police post.)
  • DPS "Verkhnebakansky" checkpoint: Take bus 184 to Verkhnebakansky village or a commuter train to Tonnelnaya station. From Verkhnebakansky, the federal highway A146 to Krasnodar begins.

East towards Kabardinka, Gelendzhik and Dzhubga via M4/E97

  • Marshrutka: 27, 11. Bus: 27V, 27M. (Trolleybuses no longer run in this direction.) Ride to the last stop, then walk about 500 meters further; from there, you’ll have a good spot with a nice view to continue your travels.

Southwest towards Abrau-Dyurso and Ozereyevka

  • From the bus station: marshrutka 102 to Abrau-Dyurso, and 101 to Yuzhnaya/Severnaya Ozereyevka.
