Martigny is a city in Switzerland.

Hitchhiking out

South towards Aosta

AGIP station at the southern end of the city is a great spot. To get there, simply follow any street to the south, Rue du Levant for instance and follow signs "Italie", "Aoste", "Grand Saint-Bernard". There is a roundabout, so that cars drive slowly; good visibility; lots of space for cars to park. Marion_and_John found a lift in 5' there.

Option 1

Try to hitch behind the big roundabout at the pedestrian crossing it's a shit spot but possible if you're fast. You can basically take any ride because they will bring you to Option 2

Option 2

The first bend up the road is a great hhing spot with plenty of space to stop, it's easy to spot you and cars are going slow. There is a restaurant and a bus stop called Martigny-Combe, sur-le-Scex. Either walk there from town, take the bus, or hitch from Option 1.

Option 1

Hitchhike on the opposite site from the spot towards Aosta, you will get all the traffic coming from Italy and Verbier. There is no gas station, but a good shoulder right before the big roundabout that turns into a highway and bypasses the town. From there it's very likely to get rides to Lausanne and up the valley towards Sion. If you wanna go to Bern wait longer or go via Lausanne. Use a sign

Option 2

The bad weather hhing spot right before the onramp on the nortg of town. Stand on the Bus stop "Martigny Portes du Rhône" to catch the local traffic coming out of town. Use a sign

Accommodation and Sleep

Based on local advice, Marion_and_John slept for free inside the Amphitheatre Romain. It is slightly south of the center of the city, accessed from Rue du Levant. Great spot !
