Maps.me

Maps.ME is a freemium mobile maps app for Android and iOS. You can select a certain area and download this map to your device. Once that process is finished you can use it offline - no internet, mobile data or sim-card needed anymore.

CoMaps is the latest free and fully open source fork of Maps.ME (its actually based on Organic Maps (OM) which is a direct fork of Maps.ME; CoMaps was created by ex OM volunteers due to issues with governance, transparency and some closed sources in OM). CoMaps has the most functionality of Maps.ME and has no ads, is privacy-focused and run by a community of volunteers.

I have been traveling for years and fortunately during the first days I found this great map. And I am still using it always when I go anywhere by hitchhiking. Maps.ME limits your offline downloads to 10 regions, after that you have to buy a subscription. There could be other limitations in the free version.
