Other useful info
Sometimes, when you reach the Kazakhstan border but your ride stays in Russia, you might end up waiting near the Kazakh checkpoint. Usually, after about half an hour, the border guards themselves will come to offer assistance. They can easily get you onto passing buses to Karaganda or Pavlodar around midnight, where you will arrive the next morning for free. The behavior of the Russian border guards is not well documented.
