Hitchhiking and Travel Features
- In general, as everywhere in the Caucasus, the attitude of locals towards travelers is good. Outside cities, hospitality, openness, and genuine joy in hosting guests are preserved.
- There may be problems with movement during counter-terrorism operations. You will be warned about the KTO (counter-terrorism operation) regime in advance, before you enter its zone. Do NOT try to enter a KTO zone! Cross the borders with neighboring regions only via the main highways. To enter Georgia, only use the Verkhniy Lars - Dariali Border Crossing near Vladikavkaz.
- Remember, the zone along the Main Caucasus Range is a border area ("pogranzona") and requires a special permit in advance (for example, through the Gosuslugi site). Terskol, Elbrus, Verkhniy Baksan, Verkhniy Chegem, Tyrnyauz, and Bezingi are not in the border area.
- Because of weak lighting on highways and in settlements, be sure to bring safety vests, flashlights, and other reflectors.
- In the evening, the number of cars drops dramatically, especially in the mountainous areas.
- There is a serious checkpoint between Kabardino-Balkaria and Ingushetia. Carry documents at all times. Do not transport anything prohibited.
- The ring road on the Baksan bypass is unlit, but there are many DPS (traffic police) officers there. Few good hitchhiking spots except a convenient bus stop towards Tyrnyauz. Towards Pyatigorsk, there are crash barriers and a narrow asphalt shoulder starting immediately.
- From Nalchik towards Baksan and Pyatigorsk you can take suburban minibuses from the bus station.
