Hitchgathering/2025
What?
The Hitchgathering is a DIY hitchhiking festival that has been organised since 2008. It usually happens in August and sees a bunch of hitchhikers congregate at a different spot in Europe. Usually the bulk of the food is obtained by dumpsterdiving and cooked on the fire; everything else is open to everybody's imagination. Usually there is swimming, music, games, story-telling, workshops... whatever you can come up with! Everybody is welcome without any need to announce your presence or register yourself anywhere beforehand.
The main organisation platform is this wiki page; there is also the Hitchwiki Signal group. Often there are pregatherings (see below) where people can meet beforehand and perhaps already start a caravan towards the main gathering.
Where?
Jurbarkai, Lithuania
- It’s privately owned and we have permission to be there and use the space, so no worries about getting kicked out by the authorities or whatever.
- in addition to the property being on a big swimmable river, there is also lots of room for camping and a few options for fire pits. Including one that is covered, so if it rains, we’ll have a structure to take refuge under, while still maintaining our fire.
- also, in addition to there being lots of space to camp, there are also several structures that people can sleep in, such as a barn, a garage, a small caravan, and a sauna! So plenty of places to sleep inside, as well as outside.
- also, at at least one of these buildings, is working electricity, that we are permitted to use to charge our devices.
- as if all of that weren’t enough, there is drinkable water from the well on the property, so we can stay hydrated, and don’t have to go foraging for water.
- speaking of foraging, the property is only about 4km to a very hitchable road, though there is possibility to even hitch to that road, just with less traffic.
But from that hitching spot, there are several towns within a half hour drive in any direction, with plenty of supermarkets, and potentially their dumpsters.
